Wil Schmal - guitarist & Composer

Wil Schmal is Guitarist Composer and Singer Songwriter, she lives and works in Amsterdam.

At the age of 6 she received her first guitar lessons from her father, a "rock 'n roll" guitarist. He was a self-taught guitar player, sound engineer and guitar amplifier builder. Wil also performed with him. During her high school years she performed in various bands including the school band. And as an opening act in her teen age band for the well known dutch singer songwriters duo Elly & Rikkert.

In the 90s she played with the ska/rocksteady band “Jammah Tammah” with which she played on national and international stages. Wil has made two CDs with this band "SKBANG! "Dizzy" (Top Hole records).

She followed jazz education at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen. In 2000 her CD with her own work "Shadow's and Lights" was released by the jazz label VIA-records.

She studied South Indian Carnatic (Rhythmical) Music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. In 2016 she finished the fourth and last year of the Contemporary Music Through Non-Western Techniques Program with Rafael Reina as her principle teacher.

Wil Schmal wrote music to the words of poets like Diana Ozon, Bart FM Droog and they released a cd 'Voorbindbuik' (2008). She occasionally accompanies dutch artists such as Ellen ten Damme and Angela Groothuizen. She has playing experience on stages such as: Paradiso, Zomerjazzfietstour, Lowlands, Reuringfestival, festival Midzomerzaan and Landjuweel Ruigoord.
